Karrueche Tran admits that she’s struggled with the negative comments she’s had since dating Chris Brown.
The 27-year-old model and actress was in a relationship with the singer after he was convicted of assaulting Rihanna.
She tells Newsbeat: “I want to respond but I’ve learned it’s best to just let it go and not even put any energy towards that.”
Karrueche says she ended her relationship with Chris Brown earlier this year – on Twitter.
She split with him after reportedly reading on celebrity site TMZ that he’d fathered a child with another model.
“I used to date him, and now as I am growing into myself and maturing and getting my career together, I am starting to have my own name without having to be associated,” she says.
She describes how she has had to learn to “block out” negative comments on social media and believes that her relationship with Chris Brown has affected her work.
“I feel like I shouldn’t have to explain myself to anybody because this is my life and I can do whatever I want. But in the same breath, it’s like, now that I am trying to focus on my career and get my stuff together, I have to clear up certain things.
“Negative stuff was being said and being brought up. A lot of people were like ‘she’s only famous because of Chris Brown'”.
Karrueche says she’s no longer in contact with Chris Brown, and adds “we’re not friends or anything like that at this point”.
“A lot of people think I am a weak individual because of past situations and when it comes to business sometimes people don’t want to be involved with somebody like that. Which is understandable, but it sucks, because I’m not a weak person.
“It’s these people who sit behind their phones and just say mean things, just because.”
The star’s first time in the UK was marred with accusations about the London club she appeared at.
As she appeared at DSTRKT, there was a protest outside by a group of people who claimed door staff had turned them away because of their weight and skin colour.
Karrueche, who is part African American, said she didn’t “support anything like that ever”.
The club says it has “always operated an anti-racist door policy”.
