MP blames Police for Akooko killings

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea has called on the Police hierarchy to punish officers who unleashed harm unto some unarmed residents in Akyem Akooko in the Eastern Region.

The MP questioned the basis on which the police officers will rather be violent in their quest to ensure law and order.
“What kind of professional training do these individuals(Police) have in trying to open fire on unprotected civilians,” he said.

Violence erupted in Akyem Akooko on Tuesday after some residents of the town engaged in exchanges with supporters of a famous fetish priest whom they accused of being responsible for the killing of some residents in the area.

The clashes ended up in the burning of some houses and cars.

Three people were eventually reported dead while nine others also sustained various degree of injury.

“The police are not enlisted to be enemies of the civilians and when we do not have scenarios of armed robbers opening fire on the police, the police should not use live ammunition at all,” the MP added.

Speaking to Citi News, Honorable Atta Akyea disclosed of plans to petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure that those found culpable are brought to book,

“It is a very serious matter that should engage the attention of the IGP with all respect, I am going to wake up the conscience of the IGP through a very strong petition for him to come and sieve these matters and deal with the culprits,” he said.
