WhatsApp’s Android users got a few new emoji to play around with.
WhatsApp is treating its Android users to several new features including new emoji, custom notifications and a new “low data” mode for phone calls.
The new emoji offerings include, infamously, the middle finger as well as the Vulcan Salute fromStar Trek, both of which are available in different skin tones, which are also present in other emoji within the app. The Vulcan Salute is also supported on iOS, though it’s not part of the stock emoji keyboard.
The update also added new custom notification settings that allow you to set different notifications for the different chats you’re in or mute specific conversations entirely.
Chats now also work a little more like email in that you can mark messages as read or unread.
Those who use WhatsApp to make voice calls can also take advantage of a new “low data usage” mode, which reduces the mount of data that’s used during phone calls made through the app. This will be particularly useful for people who often make calls through the app while not on Wi-Fi, as the setting could help you from chewing through your data.
Finally, the Android app also makes it easier share contact information with the people you message. When you receive contact details in a contact card, you’re now able to save the information or start a new WhatsApp message from within the app.
