Newcastle United have secured their replacement for Steve McClaren in the form of Rafa Benitez according to Spanish media outlet Cadena Cope.
The Spaniard, who left Real Madrid earlier this season after a run of poor results, would be facing an uphill battle trying to stave off relegation for the Toon as they're currently 19th.
Newcastle officials were reportedly also in contact with former Everton manager David Moyes and their sticking point with McClaren was that he would not be sacked until a replacement had been secured and announced.
The club hope that Benitez will
lead Newcastle in their crunch Monday night tie against shock league
leaders Leicester City as they travel to the King Power Stadium to try
and upset the Foxes' fairy tale.
Players, fans and even McClaren himself, are currently waiting for resolution to a season long wound that has been cutting deeper and deeper with each subsequent loss.
While a phone call between
McClaren and the club's managing director Lee Charnley ended in 'smiles'
according to the Guardian, it is becoming ever more clear that his days
at Newcastle United are, indeed, numbered.
Cadena Cope tend to report reliably so Benitez could very well be on his way back to the Premier League.
