A group calling itself Concerned Ghanaians in the United States (US) is planning to stage a demonstration against President John Dramani Mahama when he arrives in New York to address the UN General Assembly.
The demonstration, according to the organizers is aimed at mounting pressure on government to adhere to calls for a new voters register for the 2016 election.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier gave reasons to back it calls for the maintenance of the current voters register for the 2016 election despite concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The party in a 71-page document signed by General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia and National Chairman Kofi Portuphy urged interest groups to rather support the EC to carry out reforms that will further improve election management in the country.
However defending calls for a new register, one of the organizers of the demonstration Nana Yaw Twum told Citi News the current register must be changed.
“If the President can tell a country to compile a new register, why can’t his own country order for a new register?What is wrong about that?….The government of Mahama is manipulating the EC clearly,” he said.
The group is also threatening to petition the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations over police brutalities against Let My Vote Count Alliance demonstrators.
Some demonstrators were attacked during the demonstration after protesters allegedly veered off the proposed routes.
Some leading members of the party including Gabby Otchere Darko among others were flogged with horse whips.
The President arrived in New York last Thursday and is expected to address the assembly on September 30, 2015.
He will also participate in the inauguration of the UN Summit on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
This will be the second time Ghanaians living in abroad have staged a demonstration against Mahama’s government.
In January,2015, Ghanaians in Germany staged a demonstration to protest poor economic conditions in Ghana.
